Stoupa and its environment, is a unique place for holidays. Turquoise, crystal-clear seas, some of the areas most beautiful sandy beaches and a stunning backdrop of olive groves and the impressive Taygetos mountain range all contribute to make this a very special place. Stoupa lays on the central finger of the Peloponnese, in southern Greece, the Mani peninsula, just 40km. away from Kalamata and close to Aeropolis and the famous Diros caves. It is a well-known family-friendly seaside destination and an area where many people, from various nationalities, have bought properties and made it their home.
Stoupa stretches alongside three attractive bays with two sandy beaches and one pebble one, all ideal for children and adults alike. In the area it is possible to swim, snorkel, dive and go boating or kayaking. One of the beaches, Kalogria, is where Nikos Kazantzakis lived and worked with Zorbas and wrote the well-known book ”Zorba the Greek”. The ancient writer Pausanias claims that the citadel of Lefktron was in Stoupa where a temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena - the statue’s head can be seen in the Kalamata museum.
Stoupa has a very mild climate with possibly the mildest winters of continental Europe, giving many sunny and warm days throughout the winter. The area is well-suited for winter visits, particularly for people who like walking, hiking and enjoy being outdoors. Stoupa can be used as a centre for visiting the surrounding mountain villages with their old Byzantine churches, tall, imposing tower houses and old springs. There is ancient stone paved mule tracks’ wending their way upwards to connect villages perched on the hillsides, interesting stone bridges to cross and, close by, two deep gorges to wander through. Then in the evening enjoy ouzo, whilst watching the sunset over the sea, it’s a memory you will never forget!
